On the verge of the 19th to the 20th century, reduced arts and crafts, free of pomp and overloaded ornamentation, emerged in Vienna and southern Germany. At the same time, the great designers of the time could count on the high quality of craftsmanship of important manufacturers. The epoch of Art Nouveau was inspired by the British Arts & Crafts movement and by Japanese art. In Austria, this modern art movement took hold at the latest with the founding of the Vienna Secession in 1897 and became the dominant art movement at the turn of the century.
