    Description

Before Koloman Moser joined the Wiener Werkstätte, he designed a wide range of decorative objects—including lighting fixtures—for various Viennese companies. As early as 1899, he created lamps for the renowned Viennese glass distributor E. Bakalowits Söhne. In 1901, Moser designed several so-called “Penden” (pendants), hanging lamps suspended from ceiling panels by ropes and adorned with decorative elements. The design options were remarkably flexible: the size of the ceiling panel, the number of suspended lighting elements, and the decorative details could be adjusted almost without limitation. Moser used several four-light chandeliers to furnish his own home, as evidenced by a photograph of his living space published in the esteemed art magazine “Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration” in 1906. The ceiling plate and decorative elements of this particular example are made of silver-plated brass and display Moser’s signature hammered design. The lamp globes, crafted from opal white glass by Loetz, are enhanced with fused red spots, a striking feature emblematic of Moser’s geometrically abstract decorative style.
