    Description

The present vase is an outstanding example of the Phenomen Genre period, which was crucial for Loetz glassworks. In the years around 1900, a large number of variants with warped silver oxide threads were produced. These “Phenomenon Genre” called decors were each followed by a serial number. Some of these designs were combined with different vase shapes and produced in larger numbers.
In this case, the decoration was applied exclusively to one vessel, namely the vase with pattern cut 802, after which the décor is named. Only a few examples are documented. Two vases are in German museum collections, one at the Bröhan Museum and the other one at the Passau Glass Museum. Two others are in private hands. Our specimen completes this list.
The decoration is remarkably complex. On a rust-colored ground (Loetz original designation “metallroth”), cobalt blue oxide threads were spun on the wall, and silver yellow ones in the upper part. Then, while still malleable, they were warped upside down with special tongs to form four symmetrical feather patterns. The elegant vase, with its classic shape, beautifully accentuates its complexity. The colorful decoration makes it a real desideratum for Loetz collectors.
