Vase, Johann Loetz Witwe for E. Bakalowits Söhne, decor Phenomen Genre 7773, ca. 1899, signed
The collaboration between the Johann Loetz Witwe glassworks and the Viennese glass dealer E. Bakalowits Söhne spanned more than three decades. However, their most significant contributions to the history of decorative arts emerged around 1900—a period widely regarded as the pinnacle of the Art Nouveau movement. The vase presented here originates from this particularly creative and influential phase.
At that time, glass production in Klostermühle was defined by two distinctive design features: the intricately combed and thread-wrapped decoration, and the shimmering, metallic iridescent surface. This signature technique was introduced in 1898 and became known under the term Phenomen Glass. Vessels created using this method are considered among the most technically advanced, artistically innovative, and commercially successful products of the Loetz manufactory.
This particular vase features the Phenomen Genre 7773 décor, distinguished by ist broad, dynamically distorted bands with an intense bluish shimmer set against a radiant orange background. The vibrant color palette reaches ist full aesthetic impact when combined with the vase’s striking silhouette.
The ground pontil mark bearing an engraved signature underscores the authenticity of the piece, making it a highly sought-after collector’s item for connoisseurs of Jugendstil glass art.
