Vase, Johann Loetz Witwe, decor Phenomen Genre 1/696, ca. 1901, signed
Around 1900, at the height of the Art Nouveau movement, glass production in KlostermĂĽhle was defined by two distinctive design elements: the intricately combed and thread-wrapped decoration, and the shimmering, metallic iridescence. This signature technique was introduced at the Loetz glassworks in 1898 and became known under the collective term Phenomen-Glas. Vessels of this type are among the most technically sophisticated, artistically refined, and commercially successful products of the manufactory.
One outstanding example is the rare Phenomen Genre 1/884 decor—among the most beautiful in this series. It features a base of Candia glass with an opaline underlay, overlaid with a clear layer intricately wrapped in silver-yellow threads. Delicately veined silver-yellow spots lend the decor ist distinctive character: like water lily leaves, they unfold across the surface of the clear, minimalist, and modern vase form. The golden-blue iridescence reveals the full beauty of the piece, adding depth and a captivating elegance.
The sophisticated interplay of form and decoration allows the vase to radiate in a truly exceptional light, demonstrating the artistic and technical mastery of the Loetz glassworks.
