Pair of vases with droplets, Johann Loetz Witwe, decor Phenomen Genre 1/4, ca. 1901, signed
Glassworks Johann Loetz Witwe constantly experimented with new decorations and different forms. The first vessels with droplets had been produced in the years 1900-1901. In this design element, Max Ritter von Spaun, the owner of Loetz glassworks, was likely inspired by renowned American company Tiffany. However, at Loetz these technically challenging droplets are more prominently placed and feature their own decoration in the form of drawn, iridescent threads. In these spherical vases, five delicately executed droplets of varying lengths accentuate the smooth curves of each of their doubly dented glass bodies. At the same time, they create a contrast to the combed decoration of silvery-yellow threads. This decor variant was among the rarer variations produced by Loetz and is highly sought after by collectors. These collector’s items are further enhanced by the “Loetz Austria” signature in the polished pontil mark.
