Jack-in-the-pulpit vase, Johann Loetz Witwe, decor Candia Medici, ca. 1902
Organic shapes were highly popular at the glassworks of Johann Loetz Witwe, thus the designers of the manufactory created a variety of floral objects. Particularly “Jack in the pulpit” and floriform vases were in high demand, especially in the early years of the Loetz company, and were produced in many different decor variants. The original inspiration for this shape is the Oriental rose sprinkler vessel used to sprinkle fragrant rose water. Stylistically similar glasses can be found in the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the “Jack in the pulpit” vases made of Favril glass, which were inspired by the giant flower of the botanical Arisaema. On the large flower of the present vase, the dazzling iridescence of the Candia Medici decor is particularly well highlighted.
