Horses at play, Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien, ca. 1940, brass, cast, patinated, fine wood plinth
At the Werkstätte Hagenauer, depictions of horses were created in various materials, including metal and wood. These works feature dynamic movement studies and realistic horse forms, yet are characterized by the reduced formal language typical of the workshop around 1935. Galloping or rearing steeds made of patinated brass were often presented individually or, as seen here, in groups of two or more animals, forming small, lively scenes. The Hagenauer brothers masterfully capture the dynamic movement in a sculptural moment frozen in time.
