    Description

Gustav Gurschner ranks among the leading bronze artists of the Austrian Art Nouveau movement. The present casket, with its hinged lid, lateral handles, and front-mounted lock, unites two motifs characteristic of his oeuvre: a rigorously linear, geometrically abstracted ornament of archaic resonance, and elegantly modelled female nude figures.
Executed in patinated bronze, the coffer displays a clearly articulated, planar decorative scheme. At the front, two kneeling female figures appear in relief, their warmer bronze tone standing out effectively against the darker patinated ground. The dynamic interplay between sculptural form and linear ornament reflects the visual language of Art Nouveau around 1900, a period that embraced newly abstracted decorative vocabularies while idealising the female form.
Characteristic of Gurschner’s work is the consistent synthesis of artistic ambition and functional purpose. The object remains structurally lucid in ist construction, while ist refined decorative treatment elevates it beyond utility, transforming it into an autonomous work of art.
