The founders of the Wiener Werkstatte Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser pursued the ideal of artistic integration of all areas of life in the sense of the Gesamtkunstwerk. This radical claim could only be realized in a few contemporaneous projects. The patronage of the bourgeoisie was primarily their concern. Impressive examples of this are the Palais Stoclet in Brussels or the Villa Primavesi in Vienna. Their designs replaced cluttered historicism with contemporary, outstanding quality craftsmanship. The Wiener Werkstätte heralded the beginning of contemporary-modern Austrian design. It remains unsurpassed in the quality of its executed objects to this day.
