Loetz vase Titania Genre 6388 ca. 1909

Titania was the most successful new decorative line introduced by Johann Loetz Witwe in 1905. The architect and designer Leopold Bauer was particularly fond of this decor, employing it in his elegantly restrained and geometrically simplified vessel designs. Produced in a wide range of colour combinations, orangeopal with Green proved to be one of the most popular and commercially successful variants.

This vase features a laubgrün (“leaf green”) ground overlaid with a second layer of kaiserrot (“emperor red”). A finely trailed layer of silver glass, referred to internally by the Loetz glassworks as Stahlgrau (“steel grey”), was then applied. Following an intermediate reduction firing to achieve ist characteristic metallic lustre, the decoration was sealed beneath a final casing of clear glass.
