    Description

Attersee is one of Austria’s best-known painters. He received international recognition after participating at documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 and the Biennale di Venezia in 1984. From 1990 to 2009, Attersee also held a chair in painting at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In honor of his 80th birthday, a large solo exhibition was held at Kunstforum in Vienna.

The main motif in this painting is a house divided into two parts. With the building literally torn in two pieces, Attersee insinuates Germany’s political division, as the title “Gebrochenes Deutsch” (“Broken German”) may suggest. All subjects on this composition are broken or torn apart, as well as color-wise he divides the painting into a colorful left and a dark right part. Furthermore, the colors Attersee choses in this painting, namely black, yellow and red, can be read as the national colors of Germany.

With this work dating from 1985 Attersee not only fuels the viewer’s imagination but somehow stimulates political reflection.
