    Description

Like a bud growing of a leaf, the female figure unfolds from its vegetal shell, protected by only one leaf. She represents Flora, Roman goddess of flowers, symbolizing the awakening of spring and revealing her youthful beauty in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature. From her roots Flora rises with utmost grace. The sensuous line in which Gurschner casts the entire sculpture is simply stunning. Equally exquisite are its many details, such as the nude’s delicately drawn face and finely chiseled hands, or her flowing drapery. The lamp with its organic details is an outstanding example of Gurschner’s much-praised small sculptures. It is no coincidence that the English art-journal The Artist in 1900 devoted an extensive article to the artist, showing this beautiful object.
