Round table, design by Josef Hoffmann, execution by J. & J. Kohn Vienna, ca. 1910, beechwood, bent and stained
At the beginning of the 20th century, the firm J. & J. Kohn, together with the Gebrüder Thonet, ranked among the most successful furniture manufacturers in Europe. Their designs were among the most significant examples of Viennese Art Nouveau. Through collaborations with some of the leading designers of their time and thanks to exceptional craftsmanship, the company’s products achieved international recognition, reaching even the United States.
The elegant side table, with its round top, four supports, and a base tapering gracefully toward the center, impresses with its clear geometric design and restrained simplicity. This aesthetic stands in marked contrast to the heavy, richly ornamented furniture of the late 19th century.
The model was exhibited at the Austrian Exhibition of Applied Arts of 1910–1911 at the Museum of Art and Industry (today the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna). The warm sheen and tone of the mahogany-stained and polished beechwood emphasize the table’s refined lines and highlight the natural beauty of the material.
