Swan-shaped Loetz vase Email with Papillon ca. 1905

The Swan ranks among the most popular and commercially successful animal designs introduced by the Loetz glassworks around 1904 as part of an expansion of its product range.

Throughout its production history, Loetz created not only functional and artistic glassware but also a wide variety of objects inspired by the natural world. These designs drew on motifs ranging from shells and snails to birds and snakes.

Produced in several sizes, the Swan was conceived as a vase, with the bird’s body forming the vessel itself. The present example is decorated in the “Papillon” pattern, whose iridescent surface further enhances the elegance of the design.
