Bronze figurine on a marble base, mod. no. 38, design and execution by Gustav Gurschner,ca. 1901, bronze cast, gemstone, marble
Gustav Gurschner was one of the most important bronziers of Viennese Jugendstil. He was member of the artists association Wiener Secession and Hagenbund and contributed his distinctive formal language to Viennese arts and crafts around 1900.
Our bronze sculpture is a stunning example of a symbolistic figurine with secessionist style elements. The empowerment and mystification of women was a core element of Symbolism and was consistently taken up and used by the Secessionists in Austria. This piece with its precious details like the gemstone adorning her dress and its beautiful draping is all in all a wonderful example of secessionist art from Austria around 1900.
