    Description

The painting “Six Prisons” (2006) by American artist Peter Halley depicts six rectangular areas of equal size, structured with horizontal lines. The geometrically designed areas are painted in bold, bright colors, and each is partially textured with Roll-a-Tex, an additive that is used to create coarse surface structures. This technique is typical of Halley and serves to create a vivid composition despite the emphasized regularity of the image structure.
The painting is characterized by its exceptionally powerful use of color. The six individual canvases that make up the painting radiate in fluorescent tones ranging from lemon yellow to coral red to petrol green. The result is a sounding, pulsating visual energy that makes the painting come alive despite its strict symmetry. Here, we see an impressive interweaving of formal structure and sensual intensity.
As a central representative of Neo-Conceptualism, artist Peter Halley, born in New York in 1953, frequently uses geometric shapes in his paintings, which he refers to as “cells,” to reflect on social structures—how they emerge, how they are maintained, how they manifest themselves both materially and immaterially. His art is at once an emphatic expression of visual theory – powerful, critical, and at the core of contemporary discourse.
