Pair of vases, design by Leopold Bauer (attributed), execution by Johann Loetz Witwe, decor Phenomen Genre 1/64, ca. 1900
Around 1900, at the height of the Art Nouveau movement, glass production in Klostermühle was defined by two distinctive design elements: the intricately spun and combed thread decoration and the shimmering, metallic iridescence. This characteristic technique was introduced to the glassworks in 1898 and became known under the collective term Phenomen-Glas. Vessels of this type rank among the most technically refined, artistically sophisticated, and commercially successful creations of the manufactory.
The presented pair of vases features the Phenomen Genre 1/64 decor, though without the typically associated droplet applications. The deep cobalt blue glass is horizontally wrapped with opaque red-brown threads, which are irregularly shaped into delicate hooks. This fine marbling adds dynamic texture to the smooth, minimalist vase bodies, whose horizontally flared rims further enhance their strikingly modern aesthetic—reminiscent of the restrained elegance found in the designs of Leopold Bauer. Both pieces are signed with “Loetz Austria” at the bottom.
