    Description

Josef Hoffmann was one of the leading designers of the Wiener Werkstätte. His designs ranged from lighting fixtures, furniture pieces, tea sets, glasses, ashtrays, to entire smoking sets. In the 1920s, Hoffmann designed several significant artworks that are still considered groundbreaking in object design in Europe today. This pair of a single-flame candle holder with a pleated appearance also originates from Hoffmann’s highly productive period. The masterful chased execution of the fluted form reflects the high quality craftsmanship of the Wiener Werkstätte. Particularly, polished brass was extensively used in the post-World War I era due to its noble, gold-like appearance. Such extraordinary objects from the Wiener Werkstätte, produced in the early 1920s, are extremely rare to find. They represent the stylistic transition between Art Nouveau and Art déco.
