Vase with gilt mounting, decor PG 7499/I on ruby-red ground, Johann Loetz Witwe, mounting Osiris (Walter Scherf & Co., Nürnberg), ca. 1899, glass gilt tin
The PG 7499/I decor is one of the early Phenomen Genre decorations. Ist ruby-red base, a distinctive and defining feature, was produced by Loetz only until the end of the 19th century, allowing the vase to be dated before 1899.
A striking element of this decoration is the bluish-silver undulating pattern. The allure here lies in the transition from a tightly woven pattern to more fluid, free-flowing wave forms. The vase is complemented by a three-handled mount crafted from gold-plated pewter by the German company Osiris. The handles rise in organic curves, tapering into drop-shaped ends that rest elegantly against the vase’s surface, reinforcing associations with water created by the decoration. The mounting is embossed with ‘OSIRIS’ and the number 576, testifying to ist origin and quality craftsmanship.
