Vase, Johann Loetz Witwe, decor Phenomen Genre 202, ca. 1900, signed
Around 1900, at the height of the Art Nouveau movement, glass production in KlostermĂĽhle was defined by two distinctive design elements: intricately wound and combed thread decoration, and a shimmering, metallic iridescence.
This characteristic technique was introduced into the Loetz glassworks in 1898 and became known collectively as Phenomen glass. Vessels of this type rank among the most technically sophisticated, artistically refined, and commercially successful products of the manufactory.
The Phenomen Genre 202 decor is among the most exquisite in this series. On a background of camellia red, silver bands twisted into feather-like patterns undulate up and down the surface, while the bluish iridescence reveals its full brilliance on the fourfold indented, bulbous vase body.
The sophisticated interplay of form and decoration allows the vase to shine in exceptional light, showcasing the Loetz glassworks’ mastery in crafting glass objects that set the highest standards in both technical execution and aesthetic expression.
