Vase, Johann Loetz Witwe, decor Phenomen Genre 2/315, ca. 1902
Around 1900, at the height of the Art Nouveau period, two distinctive design elements defined the glass production at Klostermühle: the intricately twisted and combed thread décor, as well as the iridescent, metallic finish. This unique technique was introduced in 1898 at the glassworks and gained widespread recognition under the name “Phänomen-Glas.” Decorative vessels of this type are considered among the most technically advanced, artistically sophisticated, and successful products of the manufactory.
The décor Phänomen Genre 2/315 is one of the most elaborate in this series. On a backdrop of green, horizontally drawn silver threads cover the entire surface of the vessel, which is further adorned with silver leaf tendrils. The intense iridescence causes the vase to shimmer in almost countless colors.
This décor was only recently identified, and as it is not yet listed in the Loetz literature, it makes the vase an especially sought-after collector’s item.
