    Description

The Johann Loetz Witwe glassworks in Klostermühle constantly experimented with new decors and shapes. Between 1900 and 1901, they introduced the first vases with drop appliqués to the market. For this design element, Max Ritter von Spaun, the owner of the glassworks, was likely inspired by works from the Tiffany studio. The technically demanding glass applications are more prominently featured at Loetz and are decorated with distinctive iridescent threads that have been pulled into intricate patterns.
In this twisted vase, the three delicately crafted drop appliqués emphasize the rotation of the glass body, creating a striking contrast with the combed decor of silver-yellow threads. This decor variant was one of the rarer designs produced by Loetz and is highly sought after by collectors. The piece is further enhanced by the “Loetz Austria” signature, engraved into bottom of the vase.
