Loetz vase Argentan violett ca. 1908

The collaboration between Leopold Bauer and the glassworks Johann Loetz Witwe, Klostermühle began shortly before 1902 and developed into a major success for both by 1906. At the World’s Fair in Milan in 1906, the firm exhibited glass objects based on Bauer’s designs and was awarded the Grand Prix, at the time the most prestigious international distinction in the field of decorative arts.

The small vase follows a form typical of Bauer’s designs, characterized by clear lines, a modern appearance, and a restrained formal language. It bears the decor Argentan violett, distinguished by a crackled layer of aluminum or silver foil beneath a colorless outer layer. Around 1906 this decor was used particularly frequently in combination with Bauer’s designs.
