Loetz Vase Adolf Beckert ca. 1909-10

In 1909, Adolf Beckert assumed the role of artistic director at Johann Loetz Witwe. Within just two years, the young designer transformed the glassworks with an entirely new artistic vision, one that departed strikingly from its previous direction. Beckert’s arrival marked the beginning of Loetz’s celebrated era of acid-etched glass.
Collectors of Loetz glass especially admire Beckert for his masterfully engraved and acid-etched creations, often enhanced with elaborate applied decoration. His exceptional command of these techniques is demonstrated impressively in this vase.
Beckert designed a vase, described as “pink, blue clematis, Prod. No. 6726,” for the Exhibition of Austrian Applied Arts of 1910/11. The floral décor of clematis blossoms and scrolling vines was created through the successive etching of multiple glass layers, allowing Beckert to achieve richly textured surface effects. The blue vegetal motifs were selectively re-cut, giving them a sculptural presence against the luminous pink ground.
Beckert’s forms are distinguished by their clear lines, which perfectly emphasize the decorative design. His works unite a strong sense of volume and physicality with refined, restrained contours. The vase is signed with a relief-etched “Loetz” mark.
