Vase with silver mount, design by Adolf Beckert, execution by Johann Loetz Witwe, decor Ausführung 87, ca. 1908, signed
In 1909, Adolf Beckert became the artistic director of Johann Loetz Witwe. Over the course of just two years, the young designer introduced a bold new artistic direction that marked a significant departure from the company’s previous style. With his arrival, the era of etched glass at Loetz began.
Loetz collectors particularly admire Beckert for his masterful engravings and acid-etched designs, often enriched with delicate appliqués. His exceptional command of these techniques is beautifully exemplified in this vase. The colorless base, adorned with salmon-pink stripes, is wrapped in fine threads of blue, light green, and dark green glass. The elaborate decor was achieved by etching away multiple layers, creating captivating surface textures. Selective re-cutting of the red-green plant motifs enhances their three-dimensional presence. A silver mounting featuring geometrically stylized plant elements elegantly frames the rim, completing the composition.
Beckert’s designs are distinguished by their clear, disciplined lines, which allow the decorative elements to stand out. His work balances a striking physical presence with refined, minimalist contours. The vase bears a relief-etched “Loetz” signature beneath the base.
