The trophy-like horse head joins the figures of those popular animals which Werkstatte Hagenauer produced in brass, bronze or wood from the 1940s onwards.
Its slanted, powerful neck and finely carved head perfectly express the noble animal’s grace. Reduced to its essential features, the sculpture embodies the stylized form language of Werkstatte Hagenauer at its best. Thus, the abandonment of a decorative mane reinforces the dynamic effect of the sculpture. At the same time, the high-quality materials and their perfect craftsmanship are shown to their full advantage.
The majestic horse head is well documented in the sales catalogue from 1957 and is a fine example of the masterly workmanship of wood and metal in the two Hagenauer workshops, in Vienna and Fuschl near Salzburg.
