Bronze vase Gustav Gurschner ca. 1907

With his unmistakable ornamental language, the Jugendstil artist Gustav Gurschner played a defining role in Viennese decorative arts around 1900. Characteristic of Gurschner’s work, this bronze vessel is strikingly divided into two distinct zones. The upper section of the vase is encircled by a relief decoration composed of archaic-inspired ornaments. At ist center appears a stylized insect whose antennae form a decorative mandorla enclosing the motif. The ornamentation stands out vividly against the dark patinated ground below. The gently rounded oval form, combined with the finely executed ornamentation, creates a harmonious synthesis of Gurschner’s inventive decorative vocabulary, his engagement with archaic ornamental traditions, and a modern, timeless formal language.
