Pair of bookends with a lady and dog, design by Karl Hagenauer, manufactured by Werkstatte Hagenauer Vienna, circa 1925, brass polished, marked
In addition to the variety of objects produced by Werkstatte Hagenauer, one can also find plenty of everyday objects that have been artistically refined with the unique style of mentioned traditional Viennese workshop. Thus, already in the sales catalogue from 1928, a whole chapter is dedicated to bookends. A total of 22 subjects are shown there, which speaks for the popularity of these items.
Here a central female figure adorns the two bookends. She is flanked by a dog and an amphora-like vase. We can attribute its design to Karl Hagenauer. He drew similar designs combining figural elements with animals and floral elements. This imaginative object dates from the period before 1925, shortly prior when the distinctive company logo “wHw” was introduced, and is yet another testament to the fine craftsmanship from the Werkstatte Hagenauer Vienna.
