Blue liqueur glass with cut decoration, Otto Prutscher, Meyr’s Neffe for E. Bakalowits Söhne, mod. no. I 195, ca. 1907
Otto Prutscher designed these colorful liqueur glasses with cut-peel decoration (Schälschliff) for the renowned Viennese glass retailer E. Bakalowits Söhne. They are among the most distinguished examples of glassware created for the refined drinking culture of Viennese Jugendstil. As early as 1907, the series was prominently featured in the esteemed art journal Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration. In the years that followed, these glasses appeared in numerous other publications—testament to their contemporary popularity and lasting stylistic influence.
Especially striking is this version with a hemispherical bowl: the organically rounded form of the small cup creates a bold contrast to the strict linearity of the overall design, emphasizing Prutscher’s refined interplay between functionality and decorative sophistication.
