Carl Unger, Lake Ossiach, 1945, oil on canvas, signed
Carl Unger studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1935 to 1939 under Herbert Boeckl. In 1947, he was among the founding members of the Art-Club Vienna. From 1963 to 1985, he led the master class for painting, graphic arts, and stained glass at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Between 1971 and 1975, he also served as the rector of the institution.
Throughout his artistic career, Unger explored both figurative representations and landscape painting before transitioning to a more abstract style.
The landscape “Ossiacher See” from 1945 is a typical work from his expressionist phase. The composition captures the view of the lake, surrounded by mountains, forests, and the sky. The dominant colors of yellow, green, and blue are vibrant and intense, creating a striking contrast between the deep blue sky and the sunlit yellow clouds. The expressive brushstrokes enhance the emotional depth of the painting, giving it a vivid, powerful effect.
Unger’s work is characterized by a strong sense of place, with his landscapes reflecting both the natural beauty of Austria and his emotional engagement with the environment. His use of color and brushwork underscores his ability to convey the intensity of the moment and the atmosphere of the landscape, elevating it beyond mere representation into an emotional experience.
