Mirror frame with floral decor, design Dagobert Peche, manufactured by Max Welz for Wiener Werkstatte, ca. 1922, limewood carved and gilded
Dagobert Peche was one of the most important designers in Vienna from 1913 until his death in 1923. His design genius paired with his sensibility for shapes and ornaments influenced even big personalities in the Viennese art scene like Josef Hoffmann. The influence on the works of Hoffmann in the late 1910s and early 1920s seems to be obvious. Like no other Peche managed to hide the purpose of an object beneath ornaments and decoration elements. Despite that he managed to create art objects of unbelievable elegance and delicacy. Today his works are among the most important pieces of the Wiener Jugendstil.
Designed in 1922 for the Wiener Werkstatte, the mirror was produced by the renowned frame manufacturer Max Welz in Vienna, which at the time had an exclusive contract with the Wiener Werkstatte. A documented draft for our mirror frame with floral decoration can be found in the archive of the Wiener Werkstatte in the Museum for Applied Arts in Vienna.
Peche’s extravagant mirrors were sold in the shops of Wiener Werkstatte. Whether at the Viennese headquarter or in its branches in Zurich, Berlin or New York, they reached an international clientel.
