Writing set with inkwell and pen tray, design Gustav Gurschner, ca. 1901, bronze, signed
Out of stock
After completing his studies at Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, Gustav Gurschner in 1897 spent a year in Paris where he got to know the floral style of French Art Nouveau. Thanks to the geographical vicinity to Brussels – another hotspot of European Art Nouveau at that time – Gurschner also became acquainted with the work of Belgian architect Henry van de Velde.
The writing set is a good example showing the influence of the curvilinear Art Nouveau style. Its design dates to 1898, and it was crafted for the Parisian art dealer “La Maison Moderne”. This is where we come full circle to Van de Velde. The premises of “La Maison Moderne” had been designed by the same architect. Curvilinear forms, very familiar from his designs, can also be found in this object.
Organic elements seem to gently entwine and frame the vessel at the same time. The ornament’s flowing contours stand out vividly against the dark bronze-patina, also thanks to its polished surface.
