    Description

This beautiful vase probably looks familiar to many Loetz collectors, as one example is prominently pictured on the spine of Loetz’s standard reference “pattern catalog”. The tall vase is part of a series dating back in 1898 with a hexagonal body transitioning to a round cross-section*. It is a very fine example of the glass-factory experimenting with innovative shapes. In broad, diagonal bands, this early Phenomen Genre covers the tall vase in its entirety. Perhaps, it was the Asian Ikat technique with its colorways that inspired this design. Its wave-like interwoven threads achieve an almost textile quality of the décor, whose silvery-blue pattern makes for a very harmonious combination on the “metallic red” ground (also referred to as “pink”).
The slender vessel is a rare example of Loetz’s own artistic design in the years preceding the participation in World Exhibition in Paris 1900.
