Table lamp “Flamingo”, design Franz Hagenauer 1951, execution Werkstatte Hagenauer Vienna, reduced construction, mod.no. L 68, original label, 1950s
Out of stock
Since the beginning of their creative work, the Hagenauer brothers have been focusing on reducing their artworks and designs to the essence.
In terms of lighting, they were aiming to design a model that would not only illuminate a limited area. The construction of a reduced lighting fixture that could be rotated in all directions was their goal for the Triennale in Milan in 1951. The brothers worked on the design for a long time, but in 1949/50 they applied for a patent named “Das Winkelpatent Flamingo Hagenauer Wien”.
The design of several interlocking brass tubes is dictated by the function: the combination of three angles (two obtuse-angled and one right-angled) allows the lamp to point in any given direction. Thus, one can have the light exactly where one needs it.
This ingenious patented system could be used in many different lamp variations and brought along unique designs. Our example is in wonderful condition and bears the original labels: “Rohrwinkelpatent Flamingo Hagenauer Wien” and “Österreichisches Patent Nr.167348”.
Werkstätte Hagenauer – stylistic evolution and importance
Today, the Werkstatte Hagenauer is rightfully among the most important Austrian Arts & Crafts manufacturers of the 20th century. The clear, strict formal language combined with dynamic poses and the usage of brass, nickel-plated, patinated or bare, along with copper, alpaca and exotic wood shows a high level of recognition.
However, it took the siblings Karl and Franz Hagenauer quite some time until they developed their own unique style. Karl and Franz both attended the Vienna School of Arts & Crafts and studied under Josef Hoffmann, Oskar Strnad, Anton Hanak and Dagobert Peche.
Until the closure of the Werkstatte Hagenauer on December 30, 1987, art objects of outstanding quality were still being produced. The siblings Karl and Franz Hagenauer strongly contributed in coining the term „design“ through their legacy and are surely among the most influential Austrian artists of the 20th century.
