    Description

From the late 1950s the Austrian painter Hans Bischoffshausen lived and worked in Paris. In the decade he spent there, he was part of the ZERO Avant-garde, and impulse-giving artists like Lucio Fontana had a decisive influence on his work.

“Himmel”reflects Bischoffhausen’s explorations of the artistic currents of his time. Entirely in the Informal style, the painting shows strong parallels to works by German artist Hans Hartung.

Rhythmically arranged color-bundles already point to Bischoffshausen’s later structural paintings, where sculptural and serially used elements become the most important stylistic means. These relief paintings established Bischoffshausen‘s outstanding international reputation in the 1960s in contemporary art.
